UTERINE FIBROIDS
OBSERVATION
Despite the serious symptoms from which many women with uterine fibroids suffer, about half of all women with uterine fibroids actually remain asymptomatic - at least initially. In these women, the best "treatment" strategy can be to do nothing and to simply monitor the development of the fibroids closely with regular pelvic and ultrasound exams . Regular lab tests might also be necessary to make sure that the fibroids haven't caused anemia. If there are no plans to start a family, and the fibroids don't cause any symptoms or discomfort, observation might be a good option.
However, if a pregnancy is planned, observation might not be the right strategy. Due to the space fibroids take up in the uterine cavity, they are dangerous for the fetus and can lead to severe fetal disabilities or miscarriage. Therefore, if starting a family is a possibility, it is best to talk to a healthcare provider about other treatments options before becoming pregnant.
