UTERINE FIBROIDS

SYMPTOMS

Though benign tumors, uterine fibroids can cause serious symptoms which have a significant impact on the quality of life, yet remain unrecognized by many women. The main symptoms of uterine fibroids are increased menses, both in terms of intensity and length of the menstrual bleed, as well as irregular menstrual periods and unpredictable uterine bleeds. This can also lead to anemia, fatigue, pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea (cramps, both during and before or after the period). Many women who suffer from these symptoms experience decreased work performance and decreased overall enjoyment of life. Depending on the size and location of the fibroids, they can cause back pain, constipation and urinary problems (both incontinence and retention). Further symptoms include dyspareunia  (pain during sexual intercourse) and abdominal protuberance (abnormally distended abdomen). Impaired fertility and pregnancy complications are also common effects of uterine fibroids and women with risk factors might consider an ultrasound examination before starting their family planning.
